SMA Women’s Wing
The motto of the SMA Women’s Wing (SMA WW) is, to provide a holistic platform for enabling
and bringing together Singapore Malayalee women, to make a difference and benefit
the Malayalee community and thereby the Indian community as a whole.
1. Organizing monthly talks by subject matter experts, preferably Malayalee Women, on topics
relevant to the Indian community in Singapore. We intend to cover a wide range of topics
including health, welfare, arts, parenting, cooking, entrepreneurial and legal.
2. 'Adopt a friend'- In the spirit of giving back to our older generation, SMA WW is embarking
on a programme to value the pioneer members of our community. We all know older people in
our midst who love to have us visit them, who have questions on multiple areas of technology,
or would like some company to go to the doctor or run an errand. Why not be part of
a programme whereby these older people have someone they CAN rely on? Please let us know
if you would like to volunteer to become a friend and confidante to someone from our older
generation. Let us also know if you know of an older person who would benefit from this
program. We will provide some guidelines for the volunteers
3. 'Malayalee Woman of the Month' - Featuring prominent Malayalee women in SMA facebook
page- This is an initiative to recognise and honour well accomplished malayalee women in
the Singapore society.
The woman to be featured are selected based on one of the following criteria:
1. Publicly recognized achievement in any field.
2. Significant contribution to society/community in Singapore
3. Overcame challenges (personal/professional) to become role models
4. Significant contributions to Malayalees of Singapore of a voluntary nature
Selection is based on the following terms and conditions
1. To be awarded to Malayalee residents of Singapore only, as defined in the constitution of SMA.
2. Nominated by one WW working committee member (who will summarise why the person
nominated is worthy of the award)
3. To be supported by at least 2 if not more WW working committee members.
Cultural Committee
One of the key activity of Singapore Malayalee Association (SMA) is to engage Malayalee
community through cultural events and activities. We strongly believe that Art and Culture
helps in bringing the community closer.
There are a variety of Cultural Activities that are covered in a calendar year
such as:
Karunyam: A variety program where there will be dance, music etc. This event is organized
mainly to generate funds that can be used towards certain 'Karunya Pravarthanam' (Charity
and welfare). Karaoke sessions: This is a leisurely activity that is held at the SMA Deshabandhu
Hall where young and old get together to showcase their singing talents or fulfill their singing
passion.
Varnam: This is organized by an interest group that brings the Malayalee talented artists
together to share and demonstrate their creative art works. There is also an annual arts
exhibition that is held for 2 days where the 30+ artists exhibits their creativities. This attracts
a huge amount of arts lovers from all over the island.
Gaanasandhya: This is an annual event where we bring the local talented singers to realize
their dream of performing in front a mass audience with Orchestra. This was conceptualized
in 2014, when we presented the 1st episode. The event will be theme based and the songs in
a particular year will be based on the theme. We try to include significant number of songs
from other languages.
Onam Nite: This is the signature event of SMA that is typically held around the Onam season
i.e., August or September. This is a mega show where we showcase leading artists from India
and give the Singaporean Malayalees an opportunity to enjoy an evening filled with colorful
performance from these artists. In the past we have brought, Padmashree Dr.K.J.Yesudas,
Padmashree K.S Chithra, M.G Sreekumar, Manju Warrier, Suresh Gopi to name a few.
Every year, we are trying to add more cultural activities into our calendar, keeping the interests
of the Singapore Malayalee community in mind.
We in SMA would like to invite more and more Malayalees with an interest in any art forms to
come forward, participate in our activities and support in organizing activities/events.
Members of the WW also play an active and integral part within the association, performing various roles under the broader SMA umbrella, on various projects spearheaded by the different committees. Apart from this, every year SMA WW collaborates with LISHA and other organisations on various initiatives. Please come and join us at the various events and activities, to connect or reconnect with your Malayalee roots and to build new connections in the community.
SMA Sports Wing
SMA Sports Wing strives to be the organization encouraging and facilitating a sporting life style for all Malayalees residing in Singapore. Our aim is to be the cohesive force converging Malayalees from different walks of life to a platform of healthy life style and community bonding. We want Malayalees in Singapore to come together, play hard, keep fit, fiercely compete, have fun and make plenty of friends.
SMA undertakes events in Soccer, Badminton, Cricket, Bowling, Futsal, Yoga, Run etc. Our annual tournaments have drawn large participation from Malayalee youth and veterans likewise. SMA collaborates with Singapore Sports Council and other sponsors in undertaking these events and we are continuously exploring means to collaborate with other Malayalee/Indian organizations in Singapore. As we enter a new year, we are always looking forward to organising new events and new sports items into our calendar. SMA urges all Malayalees residing in Singapore, irrespective of gender, age, fitness-level, to come forward to participate in our sporting activities. Be in touch with us with your comments and suggestions. Happy to hear from you!
